Astros GM Dana Brown states Alex Bregman’s situation remains the same as the Yankees seek infield assistance this offseason
Houston: So, the Yankees are on the hunt for a solid infielder this offseason, and guess who’s been in the mix? Yep, Alex Bregman from the Astros. But it seems like talks have hit a bit of a snag.
Astros GM Dana Brown had a chat with the media recently, especially after trading Kyle Tucker to the Cubs. Naturally, everyone wanted to know about Bregman’s status.
Brown said, “Alex Bregman’s status is still the way it is. Nothing has changed since the last time I talked to you guys.” So, it looks like things are pretty much the same as they were a few days ago.
Right now, the Astros are reportedly offering Bregman a six-year deal worth $156 million. If he takes it, that would be a record for the team, surpassing Jose Altuve’s $151 million extension.
With the Tucker trade, the Astros brought in Isaac Paredes, which eases the need for a third baseman. Paredes has played some first base too, so they could shift him around if Bregman stays. But if they decide to part ways with Bregman, this could be the moment.
Meanwhile, Yankees GM Brian Cashman also spoke to the press about their new reliever, Devin Williams, and Bregman came up in conversation.
Cashman mentioned, “We’re going to vet every opportunity out there.” He acknowledged Bregman’s talent and how he’s been a challenge for the Yankees over the years. With Bregman now in free agency, he’s got plenty of options.
The Yankees are definitely looking for at least one infielder since Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo might not be back. Jazz Chisholm Jr. played third base last season but could move back to second if they sign Bregman. They’re also eyeing first basemen like Christian Walker and Cody Bellinger.
Bregman had a rough start to the 2024 season but turned it around, ending up with decent numbers. He hit .260 with 26 home runs and 30 doubles in 145 games, but his OPS was the lowest it’s been since 2021.
