The Athletics have traded for left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Springs from the Rays, adding depth to their rotation ahead of the new season
Sacramento: So, the Athletics just made a big move! They picked up Jeffrey Springs from the Tampa Bay Rays in a multiplayer trade. This is a solid addition to their pitching rotation.
In the deal, the A’s got Springs and another lefty, Jacob Lopez. They sent over a few right-handers, Joe Boyle and Jacob Watters, plus infielder Will Simpson and a draft pick for 2025. Quite the shake-up!
Springs, who’s 32, had Tommy John surgery earlier this year but made a comeback in July. He had a decent run with a 3.27 ERA in seven starts before getting shut down due to elbow fatigue.
His best season was in 2022 when he went 9-5 with a 2.46 ERA. The A’s are hoping he can get back to that form. This trade is part of their strategy as they gear up for their first season in West Sacramento.
They’ll be playing at Sutter Health Park for the next three years while they plan to move to a new stadium in Las Vegas. Exciting times ahead!
Oh, and they also signed veteran right-hander Luis Severino to a three-year deal worth $67 million. The A’s had a rough season, finishing 69-93, and they’re looking to turn things around.
Lopez, the other player they got, made his MLB debut this past August. He’s got a 4.76 ERA in his short career so far. Meanwhile, the Rays are trying to bounce back after a disappointing season.
Boyle, who was part of the trade, has a strong arm but has struggled with control. Simpson had a good year in the minors, and Watters is still finding his way. It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out!
