The Detroit Tigers have signed right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb to a one-year, $15 million contract, enhancing their pitching lineup for the upcoming season.
Detroit: So, the Tigers just snagged Alex Cobb for a cool $15 million on a one-year deal. This guy’s a seasoned right-hander, and he’s joining the team’s rotation. Pretty exciting, right?
They announced the deal on Tuesday, and it comes with some extra incentives. Cobb can earn up to $1 million in bonuses if he pitches 140 and 150 innings. Not too shabby!
After making it to the playoffs this year for the first time since 2014, the Tigers are looking to build on that success. They even swept the Astros in the first round before getting knocked out by the Guardians.
Cobb, who’s 37, will be joining a rotation that includes Tarik Skubal, the AL Cy Young Award winner. That’s a solid lineup!
This past season, Cobb only pitched in three games, going 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA for the Guardians. He also made two postseason appearances. Remember, he started Game 3 of the ALDS against Detroit, but it didn’t go so well.
Before this, he had a decent season with the Giants, finishing with a 7-7 record and a 3.87 ERA over 28 starts. He had hip surgery last October, which kept him sidelined at the start of this season.
Cobb has been around the block, with a career record of 79-76 and a 3.84 ERA over 233 starts in 13 seasons. He’s pitched for teams like Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and the Angels.
Originally from Boston, Cobb was picked by Tampa Bay in the fourth round of the 2006 draft and made his big league debut in 2011. He spent his first six seasons with the Rays, so he’s got some serious experience under his belt.
