Henderson died on Friday after a tough battle with pneumonia. The news broke on social media, thanks to his former teammate, Yankees legend Dave Winfield. He shared his heartbreak, saying he couldn’t believe he lost such a great friend.
The Henderson family also shared a heartfelt statement. They described Rickey as a legend both on and off the field, a devoted family man, and a humble soul. They said he lived with integrity and loved baseball deeply.
Rickey was part of the 2009 Hall of Fame class and holds some amazing records, like 1,406 stolen bases and 2,295 runs scored. He was the MVP in 1990, hitting 28 home runs and stealing 65 bases that season.
Over his 25-year career, he played for nine teams, including the Athletics, Yankees, and Mets. He won two World Series titles, one with the Athletics in 1989 and another with the Blue Jays in 1993.
Born in Chicago, Rickey grew up in Oakland. He was drafted by the Athletics in 1976 and spent a lot of his early career there, earning multiple All-Star selections and awards.
He had a solid run with the Yankees too, hitting 78 home runs and stealing 326 bases during his time in New York. His stint with the Mets was also impressive, where he had 159 hits and stole 42 bases.
