The baseball community mourns the loss of Rickey Henderson, a true legend and the all-time leader in stolen bases, who passed away recently
Oakland: It’s a tough day for baseball fans everywhere. Rickey Henderson, the guy who stole more bases than anyone else in MLB history, has passed away. He was a true icon of the game, especially in the 80s and 90s.
Henderson was known for his incredible speed, racking up a jaw-dropping 1,406 stolen bases. That record is something else, and it’s hard to imagine anyone ever breaking it. The closest active player, Starling Marte, has only 354. Can you believe that?
But Rickey was more than just a base-stealer. He hit 297 home runs and had a knack for getting on base, holding the record for the most walks in MLB history with 2,190. He was a two-time World Series champ and had a personality that lit up the room.
One of my favorite stories about him is how he wanted to share his postseason bonus with every employee who needed it. That just shows how generous he was.
Even before the news broke, tributes were pouring in from former teammates and players who looked up to him. Dave Winfield, who played alongside him on the Yankees, shared how much he admired Rickey. He called him a dream to play with and a nightmare for catchers.
Others like Mike Piazza and Wade Boggs also expressed their sadness, calling him one of the greatest to ever play the game. Frank Thomas mentioned how Rickey was always the life of the party, making everyone laugh.
It’s clear that Rickey Henderson wasn’t just a great player; he was a great person. His impact on the game and the lives of those around him will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Rickey. You’ll be missed.
