Sammy Sosa expresses regret over past mistakes related to PED use, as the Cubs welcome him back with open arms.
Chicago: So, Sammy Sosa is back in the spotlight! He recently seemed to admit to using performance-enhancing drugs during his career, which is a big deal since he hit over 600 home runs. The Cubs are all set to welcome him back, which is pretty cool.
In a statement, Sosa said he’s sorry for his past mistakes, though he didn’t get into specifics. He mentioned that he did what he could to recover from injuries and keep his performance up. He added that he never broke any laws but acknowledged he made mistakes and apologized for them.
The Cubs’ chairman, Tom Ricketts, said they’re ready to move forward with Sosa and even invited him to their fan convention in January. Ricketts expressed appreciation for Sosa’s statement and emphasized that he was always passionate about the game and the Cubs.
It’s worth noting that Sosa holds the franchise record with 545 home runs. He had a bit of a rocky exit from the Cubs back in 2004, but it seems like the team is ready to put that behind them.
Now, Sosa, along with other big names like Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, didn’t make it into the Hall of Fame last year, which is a bummer. He got only 18.5% of the votes, far from the 75% needed. His next shot at the Hall could come next December if he’s on the contemporary player committee ballot.
At 56, Sosa was a seven-time All-Star and the 1998 NL MVP. He had a solid career, hitting .273 with 609 home runs and racking up 1,667 RBIs. Back in 2005, he denied using PEDs during congressional testimony, so this recent admission is quite a shift.
In his statement, Sosa reflected on the great times he had with the Cubs and expressed hope that fans and the team could come together again. He’s looking forward to reconnecting with Cubs fans, saying he’s always felt like a Cub at heart.
