Sammy Sosa apologizes for past mistakes related to PED use, 21 years after testing positive, as the Cubs welcome him back.
Chicago: So, Sammy Sosa finally came out and admitted he made some mistakes. It’s been 21 years since he allegedly tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, and now he’s ready to face the music.
Remember when he was smashing home runs left and right? He hit 609 in his career and was a total fan favorite. But despite all that, he never got enough votes for the Hall of Fame. It’s like everyone knew why, right?
Back in 2003, it leaked that he tested positive during a survey, right after he said he’d wait for his Hall of Fame induction. The Cubs, the team he played for most of his career, kind of turned their back on him. They said he wasn’t welcome at Wrigley Field until he apologized.
Well, that day finally came! Sosa, now 56, put out a statement saying he was sorry for what seemed like his use of PEDs. The Cubs’ chairman, Tom Ricketts, said they’re ready to move forward together. They even want him at their fan convention in January!
In his statement, Sosa didn’t directly mention steroids but hinted at it. He talked about how he did what he could to recover from injuries and keep his strength up. He said he never broke any laws but admitted he made mistakes.
He had some amazing seasons with the Cubs, hitting 545 home runs and winning the MVP in 1998. That year, he hit 66 homers, just behind McGwire. It was a wild time in baseball!
Sosa hopes to reconnect with Cubs fans and move forward. He said he’s always felt like a Cub at heart and can’t wait to see everyone again. It’s nice to see him trying to make amends after all these years.
