The Yankees traded catcher Jose Trevino to the Reds for reliever Fernando Cruz, boosting their bullpen with a strong strikeout option.
New York: The Yankees made a move to strengthen their bullpen by bringing in Fernando Cruz from the Reds. They traded catcher Jose Trevino to get him.
Cruz, who’s 34, had a solid season with 109 strikeouts over 66 2/3 innings. He had a 4.86 ERA in 69 games, making him the most effective strikeout pitcher in the Yankees’ bullpen.
In his time with the Reds, Cruz averaged nearly 14 strikeouts per nine innings. That’s pretty impressive! The Yankees are clearly looking to add some firepower to their relief pitching.
They also recently traded for Devin Williams, which means they’re serious about bolstering their bullpen. Williams had a great season, racking up 14 saves and 38 strikeouts in just over 21 innings.
As for Trevino, he played 73 games for the Yankees last season, hitting .215 with eight home runs. The Reds were on the lookout for a veteran catcher to help their young pitchers, and Trevino fits the bill.
This trade wraps up Trevino’s three years with the Yankees. He was an All-Star in 2022 and had a solid batting average of .248 that year, along with a strong defensive record.
Joining the Yankees is catcher Alex Jackson, who might take over Trevino’s backup role. Jackson had a tough season last year but is looking to bounce back.
